Call for Papers

Thematic issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies on LESBIANS IN EAST ASIA
edited by Saori Kamano and Diana Khor.

The Journal of Lesbian Studies will be devoting a thematic journal issue and book on the topic of LESBIANS IN EAST ASIA.

We are interested in receiving articles about lesbians in East Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China), including comparative analyses involving other countries outside of this region. We welcome both theoretical explorations and empirically based articles using either quantitative or qualitative methods, but we will also consider personal accounts. We especially encourage contributions by authors who do not usually publish in the English language. Even though the journal requires the articles to be written in English, authors who have contributions but do not write in English may want to invite someone to translate their work or help with the English, and then list this person as second author.

Topics include but are not limited to the following: experience of being a lesbian in family, school and work settings, “passing” as straight, dealing with pressure towards marriage, the domestic arrangement of lesbian couples, legal and social issues concerning lesbian couples, friendship and networking among lesbians, development of lesbian spaces, involvement in activist organizations, portrayals of lesbians in the mass media, teaching lesbian studies at the university, and so on.

Please send a one-page abstract of your proposed contribution to both Saori Kamano at s-kamano@m7.dion.ne.jp and Diana Khor at diana.khor@r6.dion.ne.jp by August 31, 2005. Abstracts will be evaluated for originality, thematic relevance, and clarity.

All thematic issues of the Journal of Lesbian Studies are simultaneously reprinted in book form by Harrington Park Press, the book affiliate of Haworth Press. We hope that the resulting book will be used in Lesbian Studies, Women's Studies and Asian Studies courses, and will be available in feminist bookstores.

We hope you will consider writing a contribution in this area. In addition, please let your friends and colleagues know about this project and forward this to appropriate individuals and lists everywhere. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Many thanks,
Saori Kamano and Diana Khor

さらに、Journal of Lesbian Studiesについての説明

About the Journal of Lesbian Studies.

We are the guest editors of the special issue on East Asia, and the editor
of the journal is Professor Esther Rothblum. Professor Rothblum is a
former President of the Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay,
and Bisexual Issues of the American Psychological Association. She also
received the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the Society
for the Psychological Study of Lesbian and Gay Issues in 1991.

The first issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies appeared in 1997, and has
been continuing since, with four issues published every year. It is a
US-based journal, but it is indexed widely in a range of English-language
journals in diverse fields. The following is an excerpt from their website:

"An enlightening balance of scholarly and practical information, the Journal
of Lesbian Studies presents an interdisciplinary body of work in a
completely lesbian context. The journal is a vital forum for research and
theory, addressing the history, politics, science, race, literature, and
life cycle issues of women who love women."

"The Journal of Lesbian Studies examines the cultural, historical, and
interpersonal impact of the lesbian experience on society, keeping all
readers current findings, resources, and community concerns. Independent
scholars,
professors, students, and lay people will find this interdisciplinary
journal essential on the topic of lesbian studies!"
